Monitoring your Schools Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
Safeguarding our children's use of ICT
Inappropriate use of school networks in Primary and Secondary schools is causing concern.
Paedophile grooming, cyber-bullying, and inappropriate behaviour are not just the concern of secondary schools and colleges.
Young children are astoundingly advanced in their use of technology. There is evidence of them using social networking sites, having eBay accounts, accessing the internet by mobile phone, and chatting to people around the world via interactive games such as World of Warcraft.
Many children naively post their addresses on Bebo or Facebook and, even more worrying, we are seeing cases of primary-aged children meeting face-to face with adults they have met online.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre have warned that online predators are increasingly turning their attention to primary pupils and have advised primary teachers to give more advice to their pupils about internet dangers.
DJP Associates can advise on and supply two systems which are designed to help your school monitor Acceptable Use Policy:
Ranger Guardian and Policy Central Enterprise
Both systems involve the use of a "client" piece of software to be installed on each PC in your school.
Ranger Guardian utilises a dedicated piece of equipment which is housed in school and connected to your network.
PCE is a software based solution which can be intsalled on a Windows 2003 or 2000 server or for small intsallations of less than 50 client computers, a PC running Windows XP would suffice

Protect your pupils, staff and reputation with Ranger Guardian
Despite traditional internet blocking and filtering systems, schools face problems with students circumventing safeguards and accessing unacceptable material.
Monitors text in every application
Unlike traditional blocking and filtering systems, Ranger Guardian monitors text in every application, including Microsoft Word, e-mail, chat rooms and MSN Messenger.
Whether a computer is used off- or online, every word that appears on the screen – regardless of whether it is saved or sent – is monitored.
Protect against:
- Paedophiles
- Bullying
- Racism
- Pornography
- Abusive language
- Religious hatred
- Weapons
- Drugs
- Hacking
Ranger Guardian is a powerful, risk assessment and behaviour management solution, designed to protect your school, teachers and pupils from malicious and threatening activity - from inside and outside the school gates

Policy Central Enterpise (PCE) offers another option to enforce the terms of acceptable use policy on school networks. PCE also provides dynamic, real-time control and monitoring of computer resources.
Key features of PCE include
Desktop Filtering
PCE filter all the content that appears on the desktop, based on a series of built-in word/phrase libraries. If a use creates a violation by viewing or typing inappropriate text, a screen capture of their machine is taken in real time. This information can be viewed later and appropriate action taken.
PCE contains comprehensive libaries of words and phrases likely to indicate inappropriate behaviour and/or misuse, based around different subjects such as those below:
- Pornography
- Profanity
- Racism
- Hate/Violence
- Drugs
- Child Predative Behaviour
Internet Time Management
It is possible to configure access to the Internet for different user groups on a time basis.
Categorised Scanning
PCE contains built-in web content filtering service which restricts access to web-based material based on different themed "categories". It is possible to allow or deny acces to individual web sites for groups as well as the ability to restrict a group to a pre-defined list of web site
Chat Logging
PCE will record and store the entire transcript of chat conversations if one takes place on a machine where the PCE client is installed. All side of the conversation are recorded, allowing it to be viewed in its entirety at a later date.
Boot up and Application Policy Display
PCE can force the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) of your school to be displayed at boot up , each login or tied to specific appications. The user must digitally "accept" the AUP to use the computer or specified application. All accept and decline responses are logged.
